Golf In Bayfield and Surrounding Areas…
The view from the 12th fairway at Apostle Highlands Golf Course. Taken by Brandon while playing a round.
Summer means something different for everyone, but for Brandon, our head housekeeper, it means GOLF!
“Apostle Highlands Golf Course is my favorite—great views and affordable. It’s not the easiest course, but not overly difficult either. My favorite hole is #12, a downhill par 5 with the entire fairway facing the lake—perfect for a record long drive.” Best round of golf? “Still waiting to break 100, but I still love every round after 30 years.”
“I also enjoy the Chequamegon Bay Golf Course in Ashland.
It’s a very challenging course with narrow, tightly spaced fairways that are unforgiving to slices (which I do more than I would like to admit, but hey, I get to visit more fairways that way). It’s very well maintained—possibly the best in the area.”
Brandon’s Golf Goal for Summer: Make the Windseeker Team boat to Madeline Island and play the course with me!

Do you love GOLF as much as Brandon? Are you looking for a perfect low-key golf vacation? The Bayfield Area has the perfect blend of stunning views, uncrowded courses, and reasonable prices to spend a whole week. Here’s a summary of courses in the area:
1) Apostle Highlands Golf Course: This is located on the hill over Bayfield. Spectacular view. Fairly well maintained for northern WI. One of our rentals, Apostle Pines #4, is right on the course. You can walk to the clubhouse for your tee time. This is an 18-Hole, par 72 course open to the public. https://www.golfbayfield.com/. The length of the course is 5,887 yards from the middle tees, and 5,127 from the forward tee boxes. As much as Brandon enjoys the view of the water, beware that water comes into play on 8 holes.
Apostle Highlands has a great course guide as well, which includes YouTube drone videos of each hole: https://www.golfbayfield.com/course.html
2) Madeline Island Golf Club - La Pointe: Perfect for all skill levels. This is an 18 hole course. Some of the holes share fairways, 7 of which overlook the lake. It is not often you can take a ferry to golf on an island.
https://www.madelineislandgolf.com/. Four sets of tees are available from the long-playing 6,356 yards back tees to the very player-friendly 4,381 yards forward tees.
3) Lake Superior View Golf in Washburn: A public course with a local vibe. Family and beginner friendly. Par 66, total distance 4340 yards. Disk golf is also available! Rates are very affordable. https://lakesuperiorviewgolf.com/
4) Chequamegon Bay Golf Club in Ashland: Opened in 1999, this is an 18 hole course overlooking the bay. This course is open to the public and enjoyable for all skill levels. The fairways are narrow and can be challenging. There is also a full service pro-shop on site as well as lessons being available to book. If you are hungry after your round, The Local Bar & Grille is on site as well.
https://www.cbaygolf.com/. Four Tees: Black: 6,524 yards. Blue: 6,260 yards. White: 6,005 yards. Rd: 5,120 yards.
5) Poplar Golf & Campground: A bit out of the way—but conveniently along the route to and from Duluth. It has a laid-back, local feel (think wings and Busch Light.) That said, these off-the-beaten-path spots can be worth the detour. The 9-hole “short course” is fun and accessible for all ages. https://www.facebook.com/Poplar-Golf-and-Campground-100089707377800/
